The ferrite is a compound using powdered iron and other metals bonded together with an epoxy. It is poly-crystalline in nature, brittle and with good magnetic properties. Ferrites are widely used in electrical, electronic and computer industries. A coil of wire wound on a ferrite core is used effectively as inductor for surge protection or as filters in high voltage electrical systems for protecting heavy and costly equipment.
Most electronic equipment are EMI sensitive and need protection from electrical surges that are frequently present in a vast electrical system. Ferrites are very useful in preventing EMI from entering and damaging sensitive equipment. Modern efficient power supplies called switch-mode power supplies also use many types of ferrites.
